IBM Thinkpad 600 Modem Troubles

Hello, I am a college student and my dad gave me his old laptop to use for school. However, he doesn't have any information about it or any kind of restore disks. It is an IBM Thinkpad 600 Pentium II 300mhz running Windows 2000. I'm pretty much a novice and I cannot figure out how to have the computer recognize the modem. As soon as I log in, a pop up window comes up looking similar to the following:
Modem

MWME0001: Modem Internal Error.
Primary Code: 5(0x0005)
Secondary Code:105(0x0069)
File: MWMWIN.C
Line: 4426

The only option is "OK" and after that it says "The modem has detected an internal error and cannot continue. Close any applications that are using the modem and press the restart modem button below. If you continue to receive this error, you may need to shutdown and restart your operating system." It only offers to restart modem(which does nothing) or shutdown modem. I went into device manager and there is no exclamation point near the modem's icon but there is one by Communications Port (COM1) and Crystal WDM Audio Codec. I've tried downloading drivers for the laptop on another computer and bringing them over to the laptop but it hasn't helped at all. I'm totally perplexed by this. I just wanted to use AOL to get onto the internet at home. I'm sorry for the length of the post but after looking through previous treads, it seemed like you folks preferred specificity. Thanks for any troubleshooting tips,

Josh Kramer

Hey josue421, welcome to the community.

I have heard of this issue before not sure if there was a solution, could have something to do with AOL. Anyway, you could try disabling the on-board modem in the BIOS, remove it in device manager, and buy a cheap PCMCIA modem to replace it and see if that works.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply Tweaker. I don't think it is a problem with AOL because under modem properties, there was something like "query" that I could click on and the modem still could not initialize. Anyway, I was looking at a website called pricewatch.com for that PCMCIA modem and I couldn't tell what was right for the notebook. Is the ballpark price around $30? Also, the current modem I have is internal and I was also curious as to if the new modem would need to physically replace the old one inside the machine. I tried to completely remove it but I can't quite get to it. Finally, I forgot to mention, I have a 802.11 b wireless networking card that I think I could use to download anything directly at my school (like a driver) that might be valuable to the notebook.

Thanks again, Josh Kramer

Check here. for a replacement. I'm sure there is other sites you can purchase either a replacement by doing a search. I'm not real familiar with Notepad computer parts, sorry.
