 more of a hassle than a prob., but...........I've always had my cd-rom set as secondary master, but a few months ago started havin probs w/ it.
My sys will just stop recognizing it. I went through a big hooplah w/ it, until i just set it as primary slave, and everything works fine, unless i have to run my recovery cd's. Then ( and i always forget) I have to change it back to secondary master for it to run the recov. cd's. And then afterwards back to primary slave for it to run cd's in windows.............Any idea of what the deal is ?????:dizzy:

Do you only have the two devices?
HDD and CD
When it is set as Secondary Master it detects ok in the BIOS.
In Windows, goto Device Manager and remove the CD Device and Remove the Secondary IDE Controller Device.
Then reboot.

When you say your System will stop recognising it.
Does it dissappear from the Device Manager or just My Computer/Explorer?

both, the device manager and "my comp."..........anyway, tried your suggestion.i remember now that i have tried this before and it didnt work. and of course it didnt work this time either. bios isnt even recognizing it under secondary master right now.......and it rarely does. the only time (except for the occasional miracle) bios recognizes it is after my recovery cd's wont work and i change it from primary slave to secondary master. then it'll run the recovery cd and work in windows for maybe 2 days, then it totally dissapears.

Check the jumper on the CD-ROM and make sure it is set for Master.
Also, have you checked the IDE cable?

lol, yeah i've forgotten to change the jumpers quite a few times, but am gettin it down now. as for the cable....not sure how to check it...........and it works sometimes, as just today i ran app recovery from the secondary master position and it appeared under windows. but not wanting the haslle of dealing w/ it, I switched it back to primary slave when i was done.

just try another cable, sometimes they can be damage when cramming it into a crowded case.
