You know that my G4 is all new to me.
What are the pros and cons of partitioning?

Very few cons, lots of pros.
Dependign on what you use the G4 for then partitioning can help immensely.
Applications like Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator use 'Scratch Space" which is a free chunk of hard drive space that is utilized to speed up operations. This scratch space can get fragmented real quick. If you have a partition dedicated as scratch space, every so often you can just choose Special > Erase Disk. To optimize that partition.
Also if you are runnign multiple OS versions like 9.2.2 and OS10 then having each on a separate partion helps keep the OS versions more stable since you aren't asking the Mac to deal with 2 systems on teh same drive (each partition is seen as a separate hard drive).
If you do partition be sure to do it before you set everything up. In prder to partiotion you have to completely erase a drive and format it this wipes out all data. So back up everything first
As far as cons..... I honestly can't think of any.
