I have tried to install a second hard drive but the DVD drive icon disappeared from "My Computer" and I cannot use it any more. I think it has to do with primary or slave but I couldn't figure it out. What did I do wrong? Please help.

Hi,
What is the setup of your drives?
What IDE ports & cables are devices attached to?
Does the BIOS recognise all devices?
Does Windows Device Manager recognise the DVD?

Assuming that the DVD drive is on the secondary IDE cable, when you look in Device Manager, are there errors beside the Secondary IDE controller and/or the DVD drive? If so, then your power supply may not be adequate.

this what I have in Device Manager. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, it display - Primary IDE channel-Secondary IDE channel and VIA bus Master IDE controller. But under the DVD/CD-ROM drives, it shows only ATAPI CD-RW which is working properly. If it has to do with the power supply, what should I do? get another one more powerful?

The BIOS does not recognize the DVD drive nor the DVD/CD-ROM drive in Device Manager. It is a ATAPI/E-IDE interface drive. It's like the DVD is not connected at all.

If it was the power supply not being adequate to support the addition of a drive, there would be an error for the IDE controller that the DVD drive is connected to (since this is the drive that is now not being displayed in My Computer or Device Manager).
Recheck your the cables that are attached to the DVD drive....ensure that they are properly seated and that the data (ribbon) cable is inserted in the correction orientation for Pin1 (the edge of the cable that has the red line or writing on it should be beside the power connector). Check the jumper settings to ensure that they are correct for the positioning of the drive on the data cable (if it's connected at the end connector, it should be jumpered as Master, and if it's connected at the middle connector it should be jumpered as Slave).

The DVD ROM has been re-established. Thank you for your help guys. But a new pbl arises. The HD that I have installed cannot be foramtted. I tried to format it and the formatting was on process for while but at the end, indicated by the bar in the formatting dialog box, I got a message " windows cannot complete formatting". Why is it doing that to me?

You can usually download it from the HDD Manufacturers website.
