w2k defragmenter problem

I'm trying to run the defragmenter on w2k server and have come accross something I haven't seen before. I doesn't even get to start before..."Engine connection lost"...pops up. Reboot don't work. I can't find anything on MS Knowledgebase. Any ideas?

Hi sshiley,

Though I've never used WIN2K Server, I have never heard of that error message for 2K Pro or for XP, so I had to do a little searching. Seems that it may be caused by file system errors, and running CHKDSK /f (if you run CHKDSK from command prompt) or ensuring that you select "Automatically fix file system errors" when you run the Error-checking tool prior to running Defragmenter should solve the problem.

The only other solution proposed that was stated to have worked was running a repair install of the operating system.
