I am trying to update my oerating system(win 2000proff). whenever i try to open the URL for windows updates the page is not displayed, i.e. i receive ablank page, not even a error message.

Go here and download Spybot Search&Destroy:

Check for updates before running the program. A tutorial can be found under help. You can safely delete what it finds.
Do likewise with Adaware 6 that can be found here:

Download CW Shredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Unzip, run and hit the fix tab to fix all found problems.
If above doesn't cure the problem go here and download hijack this:

Create a new folder on you hdd and name it HJT.
To do this go into My Computer and double click on your hdd then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HJT into the new folder. Launch HJT, click Scan, and click Save Log. Post the log in the Cyber Safety Forum adding what you have already done but don’t make any changes.
