Call me a liar :disgust: Inspite of what I said in previous posts, someone sent me an invite to get gmail so I decided to try it out for the fun of it. Besides I would like to know what to tell people when they ask since I believe, inspite of the advertisments, it will be as popular as their toolbar.
What i found so far, when I signed up, they only asked for my name, username, password, and secret question. That is all. But they have my ip address and other info about me by my visit and who knows what else.
The email screen is similar to yahoos but without all the settings. You can do filters, you can delete, create folders, etc. Come to think of it, I did not see a virus scan.
I sent out a few test messages and yahoo got it but hotmail did not.
I will play around with it for a while but I will not use it for my personal junk. It will be a spam folder. Think of the interesting advertising it will get from google.

From Lockergnome today...
What is with all of the hoopla regarding Gmail? I mean it is really cool and all, but is it really worth all of the hype? To be honest, I think in a number of areas it is - and I am going to tell you why.
The 1000 megabytes of free storage is awesome. You cannot discount that having access to a thousand megabytes of storage from a Web based account is just plain cool.
No pop-up ads getting in the way. Instead, you only see the text ads from the Google ad program, which is all right with me.
No more folders! Instead of folders, you are given the option of "labeling" e-mail for easy reference as well as using Google search technology to locate it.
All right, all of this is jim-dandy. But what really stands out to me the most is the incredible sensationalism that has been surrounding the Gmail phenomenon. It is nothing short of marketing genius, folks. Take the love for Google, toss in an extra helping of the largest free e-mail storage capacity offered by any Web based e-mail service, and then make it "invitation only." It is sheer brilliance; this is, without a doubt, one of the best online marketing moves I have seen in a long while. To me, this is an example of controlled viral marketing at its purest. The Gmail name is spreading like wildfire while Google remains in complete control of the actual growth of this brand new e-mail service. In a half backwards way, it reminds me of Hotmail back in the pre-MSN days. That little sentence "Get your free Hotmail account" at the end of each outgoing e-mail sent from the Hotmail Web site also played a major part in how we read our e-mail these days. Unlike Google, however, Hotmail did not have the advantage of mystery and the growth control that Google currently possesses. It just makes sense to me for Google to continue running with this "by invitation only" bit. Why in the heck not, right? I mean they can keep Gmail growing all the while maintaining that "country club feel" that they have going now.
Where does this leave Hotmail and Yahoo! mail? I honestly have not made up my mind, yet. I will have to continue to watch as a spectator with the rest of you, I guess. Google may decide to surprise us all and take Gmail into a whole new direction that we would never have thought of. As for Hotmail and Yahoo!, they have enough to deal with thanks to all of the abandoned e-mail accounts taking up space on their servers. Now if you think about it, Google will not really have this problem as long as they continue to use an invitation system. This way, even with 1000 megabytes of free storage for each user, they will not have to concern themselves with weeding through junk accounts to keep the servers neat and tidy. I mean after all, who the heck is going to abandon a highly valuable, by invitation only Gmail account only to make up a new one? It just simply will not happen, and Google knows this. Think about it.

You brought up a good point about the abandon email accounts. I wonder how many there are.
One thing go consider, if you have a chance you may want to go ahead and get the gmail account at this time to make sure you get the address of your choice.
gmail works completely different from any other webmail accounts I have. I use it for my yahoo groups and only the email from the yahoo groups. If I go to yahoo and post a message, then when I check my gmail account, the message I typed in yahoo appears in gmails send folder. It also merges the different messages in the same thread together to save screen space on gmails frontpage.
Both yahoo and hotmail already has made changes to their service as the result of gmail. At this time I do not plan to get rid of yahoo since I am active in their groups but if I was able to, I would close my hotmail account. But it seems it remains active even after you quit visiting because of the spam it receives. I did not use it for about a year and inspite of the tos my account remained open.

latest (http://news.com.com/The+Net+ad+you%27re+about+to+see+has+read+your+e-mail/2100-1024_3-5241395.html?tag=nefd.top) article about gmail.
I found this paragraph interesting.
"Google will not display ads on e-mail messages with words related to sex, guns, drugs and other topics it considers off limits. "We want the ads to be family friendly," said Susan Wojcicki, Google's director of product management. "There are some topics for ads we have decided that are not appropriate to be shown on e-mail."
I wonder how this could be used to our advantage to keep ads off of emails.
also this (http://renegadescove.com/screen.jpg) is a poor quality screen shot. Sorry it was a quickee and did not realized it was so bad. Too lazy to fix it.
