Ah, the woes of an overworked cpu!I've tried to unsucessfully run scan disc from nortons utilities and system tools . As normal it needs to reboot to have exclusive access to the drive to fix errors . But now when it reboots it reports that it "cannot open volume for direct access" .The main drive is inly 6 gigs big and had to clear space recently to defrag(still does not defrag completely , but this was addressed in a previous post). Any help would be appreciated , I think it may be a situation of an overused and overworked computer(my specs are listed in members profile) . But I need to keep it up and running till the end of the year so I can purchase a new one! Thanks in advance for any solutions.

Hi,
see if this helps
When you schedule the Chkdsk utility to run a startup, you receive an error similar to:
Cannot open volume for direct access.
The type of the file system is NTFS.
IFSUTIL: Can't open drive. Status returned = c0000043.
Windows has finished checking the disk.
There is currently no fix for this problem.
When a solution becomes available, Microsoft will probably release a hotfix, or provide a workaround. If a hotfix becomes available, Microsoft will include the fix in a Windows XP service pack. NOTE: You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and use the /X switch, which will force a dismount.

First try the previous suggestion, if it does not work, how much free space do you have on the 6 gig drive? also what is your operating system, ram, cpu

Thanks Renagade ! I actually had tracked down the problem after posting , was using ZoneAlarm Firewall and after theyre last update it was causing havok with Win 200/xp scan disk.I deleted the program and everything ran fine . A shame though ZoneAlarm has always been a reliable product.Oh well nothing is forever.

Strange, as it seems the problem is usually with Norton products.
Thanks for the update :)

Glad you were able to solve the problem
You may want to consider getting more space on your c: drive. There could be a resource problem because of the lack of space and it could be why you had to get rid of zone alarm. IMO empty space left over from a 6 gig drive is not enough to handle the operating system, virtual memory, swap files and other.

Bingo! I had the same problem:Cannot open volume for direct access, etc. For the record, I have lots of free disc space (usually 25GB free on 40GB disc). Though now, I will no doubt need to do the same on 2nd computer.
I had just upgraded Zone Alarm Firewall to self-executing file 50_590_043, had scandisc problem, read your post, uninstalled ZA Firewall...problem gone.
I appreciate all the information everyone everywhere posts. jbeau

and there are those who think posting the final results was a waste of time. Glad the solution worked

Just want to mention that I learned of a solution that worked *without* having to unstall Zone Alram.
Essentially this solution has you temporarily stop ZA from loading at startup and then disabling a driver in Device Manager before scheduling your Check Disk. Find all the details here:
http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/faqs/faqs.asp#gq0
I realize that many people will say they dont want to keep doing this to allow Check Disk to run and they will stick with ZA alternatives. I will check into the ones you guys suggested myself, but offer this for those that would like to keep ZoneAlarm.
After all the help I have gotten from others at CyberTech I am happy to finally be the one to help others!
