i need help please

I'm tring to restore my old computer. It has windows 98 in it.i used the windows 98se boot disk on it. Now all i get is a black screen with a c:> i have tried putting exit and a few other things in there to get out of this. But it just says bad command. Can anyone help me to get out of this? And please tell me how i can put windows xp into it....please help soon as possible!!!!!!!:disgust: :cry2:

If you just put the XP disc in and then reboot it,it should display something.

The Win98 SE was a floppy startup disk?

If you cab boot from the XP CD then it should automatically start the setup.

If not then check in the BIOS to see if Booting from CD is enabled.

I'm not sure why people are telling you to boot with an XP CD if you're trying to install W98SE.

The startup disk that you're booting with is DOS and after it boots, it stops at a command prompt, but if you're booting with a floppy, I don't understand why it would stop at C:\> because that's the command prompt if it either booted from DOS on the C drive or you changed drives at the command prompt. It may not be booting from the floppy at all (check the boot sequence in BIOS, it should be set at FDD, CDROM, HDD1, where HDD1 is your first HD) and if you formatted using the command FORMAT C: /S, you would have the DOS System Files on the C drive and it could boot from there if the boot sequence has the HD before the FD.

If your W98SE CD is the Full Installation, and you do have the System Files on the C drive, you should re-format using only the FORMAT C: command and when this is done, insert the W98SE Installation CD and restart - it will boot from the CD if you have set the boot sequence as I recommended, and the installer will begin.
