I had forgot to install my virus program and i was using my computer and it shut down and then when i tryed to start up it gives me boot failure and when i go to cmos and try to detect my boot record off my hard drive it says not installed. so i think i got a virues that causes my boot not to register is there anyway to scan for the virus without having to go into windows? i just want to find some way so that i dont have to format my drive any input would help thanks..

It's unlikely that the BIOS (non) detection was cause by the virus, but if the PC shut down unexpectedly then it could be a hardware error.
Check the cables and connections in the PC.
You could also try clearing the CMOS.
Refer to the motherboard manual for full instructions.

If you have the motherboard make/model then you can get the instructions from the manufacturers website.

If your cmos is not registering your harddrive, then you need to check your cables, if nothing else, just to eliminate the possibility. Sometimes they were installed improperly to begin with and it may work for a while but dust can create problems if it gets between the connections. Also while the case is open, make sure it is dust free.

So you can now get into Windows?
If you can get on the net then try an Online Scan

An error like that would suggest that you have a major problem.
It could be that the drive is about to die or it could be a faulty IDE cable or Motherboard.

I havent been posting for a while cause my computer wasnt letting me start up again. so i put in the start up disk and installed windows again and during the scandisk it found 2 errors on my C:/ drive so i let it fix them. then i finished installing windows files and now im on my computer i havent tryed to restart it yet i dont think i want to i might just have to leave the computer on for the rest of its life lol.... so i hope that those errors on the scandisk was my problem so i donno.

Pulling out the cord could do various damages to the disk and the PC as a whole.
Hopefully, you may have only damaged a few sectors on the disk and the scandisk has sorted it.
Please keep us informed :)

UH oh its doing it again. so im using the computer then it goes to the blue screen and says cannot write to c: drive so i click ok then it goes to the desktop and freezes so i have to restart. when i restart it goes to look for the boot record and say HDD ERROR. so if i restart again it looks for the boot record on floppy cdrom then scsi or whatever. it doesnt even look on ideo-0. when i go to bios i try to go to hdd configurations and i choose auto select for first boot record and it says not installed i donno whATS wrong any ideas whould be great. thnx

It sounds like a faulty HDD.
