Hi, I've got a problem - can anyone help?

I recently had to use my recovery cd on my pc to set it back to factory settings after it decided to stop working. Since then, I continually get the following error message every time I start up:

MPREXE caused an invalid page fault in
module CDROMSRVDLL.DLL at 017f:00cd6e08.

Can anyone put me on the right track? Many thanks.

Seems like a lot of nothing, but might be something (wow what an answer huh?). It seems a bit suspious to me. Do you have anti virus? Have you run a scan? Can you use your computer at all? What was it that caused you to run your recovery disk?

I ran Norton anti-virus yesterday and it came up with nothing. However, because my internet connection is broadband, I can't figure out a way to make Norton recognise my "modem" to run LiveUpdate. Therefore I don't know if it's a new virus or whatever.

I've no idea what happened to my PC previously. Basically one day I switched it on, and it wouldn't get past the Windows98 screen.

I've noticed another problem since - I can't seem to run any games on the PC, they always freeze whilst loading or just as the game starts.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Live update should not need to recognize a modem to update. Are you getting a Norton Error? Trying going to this website, it's norton www.symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com). I say that because there is a virus that keeps Norton from updating. Also on the desk top, right click on my computer (i don't know what os you are using) left click on 'properties' and depending on your OS either go to 'hardware' 'device manager' or just 'device manager'. Look for DVD/CD rom devices in there and click on the plus sign see if there is a yellow ! or a red X listed in there. Make note of the name of the device, you may need to get a driver for it. After looking this over, in my opinion you either have some virus (though after a recovery there should be nothing left) or there's a conflict with the CD driver.

MPREXE

Application that allows Windows 95, 98, or ME to have more than one network client, protocol, or adapter. The software routes network requests between the different adapters and clients.

START | RUN

Type in

SFC (<enter>)

Check for altered files

Follow screen prompts.

May fix it.

Also since you are on broadband and you used a restore disk you need to uninstall Norton then reinstall. You lost the settings during the restore.

Melodi - looked in device manager, no conflict between my cd drives. Updated Norton and no viruses are present.

Murf - Ran System File checker. It says the file "uneng.exe" maybe corrupt. However, my installation cd doesn't seem to have the file on it?

Any more ideas?

Thanks.

We had this problem on one of the PC's in the office this morning.
I'm not a Techie, just a curious amateur.
I got this machine back up and running by:

Boot PC, hold "Ctrl" and enter safe mode with command prompt.
cd WINDOWS
then "dir"
if you have UNENG.EXE listed you may need to delete
I also deleted WININIT.INI
I then powered-off the PC and rebooted the PC
WIN 98 loaded ok.
I then ran a virus scan (updated this morning) and nothing was found.
All applications appear to still be working OK

User says "he had a spam e-mail that he didn't delete as normal using webmail, consequently it entered this system through Outlook Express and may have been the source of the problem - otherwise not sure of problem source."
I hope this works for you.
