Unhappy Need help!!!

I wasn't sure where I should post this, but my computer can't find my modem. Also, my son went to play one of his games and it said it needed 256 colors. I went to change the setting for the colors and it only showed 16 colors. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Color Help

This should help with the color problem (you have this on your computer> under Help and Support type 256 colors. You also may have a Modem Troubleshooter (same search technique) These have both worked for me in the past. Let me know how you make out.

To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.
 1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
 2. Click the Compatibility tab.
 3. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.
Notes
 • The screen will revert to your default color quality when you close the program.
 • Try switching to 256 colors if your software program shows the wrong color or the graphics redraw slowly.
 • If your software program appears in a small window in the center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing your screen resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but in step 3 select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.
 • The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a floppy disk, compact disk, or a network

Hello sgb65, welcome to CTH.

First we're going to need a little more information about your system.

What OS are you running?

What Video Card do you have?

What type of modem do you have?

What exactly do you mean you system can't find any modem? A little more information helps.

Hi, I have Windows 98, I don't know what video card I have, and a have a 56k dial-up modem. Recently I had some computer problems so my mother-in-law reformatted the hard drive and now when I try to connect to the internet it says it can't find the modem.

Go to device manager and remove the modem. Shut down your computer. Restart and when it finds the modem, reload the drivers. It should all be ok then. To access Device Manager: Right–click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.

*Edit* To get to device manager: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click the System icon.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Ok, another way is to choose Add New Hardware, see if Windows will detect it, then it will ask for the drivers, if not you may have to look for the device yourself instead of letting Windows find it. When you get to the screen that says "Have Disc", insert the driver disc and click ok.

Thanks for your help!!! I've tried the add new hardware, but didn't have the disc. I guess I'll just have to buy another modem for it.

You may be able to obtain the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site.

Have you done exactly what Tweaker suggested? Right-click My Computer, choose Properties from the drop-down list. Click the Device Manager tab. Click the + sign next to your modem. Highlight (by left-clicking once) the modem(s), and choose Remove from the choices at the bottom of the screen. After they're all gone, reboot.
As Windows starts to load, the 'Found New Hardware' wizard ought to run. Let it find the best driver for your modem (from the Windows .cab files). Don't worry about providing your own drivers just yet. If the wizard doesn't run, post back.
