Just wondering what everyone thought. A blog (http://news.com.com/3%2C000+blogs+lose+their+voice/2100-1038_3-5236308.html?tag=nefd.top) was shutdown over the weekend that had over 3000 accounts. There is a controversy over what he should have done. Do you think he was right to shut down to prevent an overload that could bring down his whole system then a controled release the logs at a later day or should he have given time before shutting down to let members download their logs.

I voted for not caring, having never been bothered too much with blogs. But the way I see it, if it's his own stuff, then why souldn't he be able to close it, after all, he states he can't afford to run it. Look at CTH, that has grown in leaps and bounds over the few years it's been available, just imaging the bandwidth it's taking, that our beloved boss MishY has to deal with.

As far as i think, he should have announced that he cannot afford to have a blog at his server and users can download any important information they want. This is very unfair and unethical that you deprive 3000 people of thier blogs, now a days these blogs, emails and stuff have great importance in the lives of individuals . . people use them to store important information and many other things. Running a website with 3000 users is not an ordinary thing, he can easily earn profits and make up the cost or in worst conditions he can sell his domain and these 3000 members to some company, so that company can find some other hosting company.

So, i think its not good and if possible for him .. he should atleast give a chance to the users so that they can get thier stuff downloaded. Its will be a great loss to the members.

It is not only blogs. If you run a website or a bulletin board and the host decided to shutdown without advance noticification whose responsible?

Who cares? The owner/host has the right to do whatever they want without prior notice. If this site was shut down tomorrow, it would suck but it would also be Mishy's choice and right. Same with any other site on the web be it blog, bulletin board, tasteless site, useless site, or whatever.

Well, at the end of the day it's the Webmaster I guess, not a nice way of doing it, but that's up to him/her, maybe a clean break was needed for him, who knows. :)

He is going to give the individuals a chance to retrieve their data but with a control release in July.

Personally I believe if he gave advance notification, he is taking a chance of the bandwidth/server overload caused by everyone trying to download their data at once. Think of what the results of the overload, the biggest one is the complete lost of data for everyone. By controlling the release of data the possible problems could be avoided.

Besides, imo, anyone who does not keep a backup of their own work is asking for problems. If you are serious about your work you always need to be prepared for possible problems.

Dan, I'm trying to figure out why this is such a big concern for you, I mean, it's not the first website to fall off the face of the earth, and it sure as heck won't be the last. :)

It is not a big concern. Just trying to get reactions just like any other poll I post. Sometimes I use the replies to shape my opinion because others may mentioned points I did not even consider.

But then I also have the right to state my current opinion which I did not do when I asked the question so because I responded more than once to a poll, it may give the false impression that it is a big concern. So what is the big deal.
