I have a Dell from 2000 or so and we had no virus protection at all with the exception of the most basic Norton. The hard drive was not formatted. (although I was led to believe that it was) windows was re-installed, but it said there was only the exact amount of disk space required by windows. (there is really 20 GB) I assumed this was a partition wall problem. I thought that if I re-installed windows it would allow me to change that. I re-installed windows , but when i restarted it, it stopped at the big Windows Me screen. From there the only thing that I can do is Esc and that shows a DOS sceen that says windows is configuring my settings and it may take a few minutes. I have waited a few hours for each of these with no change. I believe this is the cause of one or many viruses. Might I be able to format the hard drive? Please anyone who knows what to do please offer assistance. I beg of you oh wise ones.

Hi,

If you are happy to start over then the best bet will be to Repartition the drive, then format it, then install.
