Modem problem in Win ME
Hi everyone. I have been working on this PC for days and have gotten nowhere. Let me start with the specs:
Compaq Presario 7360, I think everything but the OS are factory. I formatted and installed Win Me last year and my client had DSL at that time so I installed a NIC but no modem. Now for the problem. My client dropped DSL and is trying to go to dial up but I haven't been able to get the modem to work. I have tried 3 different modems which I tried in one of my PCs running Win Me. All 3 worked fine in my PC but I get a no dial tone error every time I tried them in his PC. I have tried them in each of the 3 PCI slots and get the same error every time. Also, the first day I got the PC I uninstalled his NIC and installed the modems trying to get online. Then I reinstalled a NIC and tried to log on to my home network to update his system. I was able to dl one critical update (the only one needed). Then I went back for the recommended updates (42 of them), when I started the dl it was like I lost connection, the dl never started and that was the last time I was able to get online with this PC. I'm wondering if the PCI slots are bad in some way. But one of the slots had ever been used before. I am going to install a sound card to check the slots. The only other thing I'm curious about it that the modems all installed on COM3 but in the Device Manager shows COM1 to be in use. Is that right? I'm sure I left some things out but its late and my 6 year old son has been "helping" me. So ask me some questions, give me some tips or suggestions. Just what ever you can think of. Thanks for your help. Mark

Com port 3 is ok.Have you uninstalled the adsl drivers.I would be looking in the Device Manager to see if 2 modems were installed.I would delete the dial up one, reboot and let windows reinstall it.

I know it may sound silly but you do have it pluged in "line" and not "phone"

Yes. I have even plugged the phone line straight to a phone to make sure I have a dial tone. I have plugged the line into the modem and then to the phone and the phone has a dial tone each time.
When I try to connect to the internet I can hear the modem "click on" but I never hear a dial tone or numbers being dialed. Did that make sense?

Is there a virus or trojan out there that can prevent my modem form kicking on? Or prevent a NIC from connecting to a LAN?
