Apache Symbolic file link

I recently have been playing around with apache and want to make the file /home/user/unitinfo.txt accessible via the web server so i decided to make a symbolic link of the file into /var/www/http however the apache logs indicate that symbolic links cannot be used.

is there anyway around this?
