Mp3/wma

I have a RIO Cali MP3/WMA player. I copied 14 songs from a cdrom to it. the instructions say it can have 4 hours of MP3 and 8 hours of WMA. right now it shows 222 MB of the 256MB it has so only 34MB are still open. how can only 14 songs copied from a cd take up so much memory?

Depends on the bitrate (size) of the songs.

A high bitrate will be better quality, but will be a larger file size.
A low bitrate will be lower quality, but will be a smaller file size.

I find 160k a decent bitrate to listen to on my PC, but for small storage the manufacturers probably base the calculations on 128k or less, maybe even 92k or 64k.
