View Full Version : IE/Mozilla refusing to open the same URLs!?

In a nutshell...my browsers (IE 6 & Mozilla) both refuse to open some websites (i.e. NEITHER one will open ikea.ca, among others, and the URLs that can't be accessed are consistant in BOTH browsers).
And just let me assure, you...the websites I can't access CAN be accessed from other computers/locations...so it's not an issue on their end. Also, other than the problem URLs my internet connection is fine...it's otherwise very fast and reliable.
I'm running Windows 98 and I use a DSL connection. I've ruled out issues with my anti-virus/firewall software (I've disabled and uninstalled both to make certain), it's not a cookie issue (other cookie-necessary sites work just fine and I've lowered all privacy settings), I've fiddled with my DNS configuration at my IPS's request AND I'M RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS!
Tech reps at my ISP are just handing my problem around to other agents and are openly declaring defeat.
ANY comments or suggestions anyone would care to make would be GREATLY appreciated!

Welcome :)
Test the URL via a Proxy such as
http://www.anonymizer.com/
http://www.anonymization.net/

Hi degsy, and thanks for the advice.
Actually, I tried that on my own last night after noticing that all of the URLs I'm having problems with share the first three digits of their IP address. When I access the sites anonymously, I have *no problem* loading the pages at all.
I have given my ISP this new information and they still can't help me.
Can you?!?! :)

There are several things to try. they may work, they may not :hmm:
Open a Command Prompt and type
ipconfig /release
press enter
wait 10 seconds then type
ipconfig /renew
enter
Also, try resettings the Modem
---
search your PC for the host files. Either Hosts or LMHOSTS or LMHOSTS.SAM
See if there are any entries other than 127.0.0.1

I tried the IP config deal with my ISP this morning and it amounted to nothing. As for resetting my modem, I've unplugged it (it doesn't have a power or reset button) and that's not helped.
As for the host files, I'm not sure I understand what I'm meant to do once I find them. Actually, I'm SURE I don't know what to do :)
I've located a host and Lmhosts file - but here's where I get stupid - what do I DO with them?

Open them in Notepad and see if there are any entries there.

Ah, that's what I thought. But when faced with an obvious answer, my usual response is to assume I'm missing something important!
There aren't any entries or any entries other than the 127.0.0.1...
Uh oh...does this mean I'm without hope?

This does sound like it might be a DNS issue, is it still happenning? I know you posted a few days ago which might have given it time for the servers to catch up
