Connecting a routher to another routher

Hi,

I was wondering if I could connect a routher to another routher. I am only 14 but I am well experienced, the routher I own is a Netgear Wireless 54G Routher (Also Has 4 Ports), on july 14 I have friends bring over computers, I didnt keep track of how many friends I invited bringing computers, well right now i have at least 5 comps, for sure coming. Right now only two computers are connected to my routher, 1 wireless and the computer im using to post right now, on july 14 I have at least 7 people bring there own comps, at my last mini lan party my friend brought over his routher, (at that time i didnt have a laptop) so i connected my modem directly to my computer. Would i be able to connect my friends routher to my routher? well i know what i wrote is confusing but if u could help me out plz do... If u want to help me over aim my screen name is >billedoc<

Yes you can but you'll have to make one of them "dumb". Go into the settings for the router you want to dumb and turn of options like DHCP, port forwarding etc, and change the internal IP of it to something other than that of the router that is staying smart.

Basically what you want to do it turn your router into a switch.

If you need more help then let us know the models of both routers and I could probably find the manuals somewhere to write out some instructions.

Two routers are better than one

Yes you can attach two routers and many more together. I'm not exactly sure how to do it with wireless (I'm a hardline fan all the way, not too experienced with wireless) routers. I know hardline routers have an uplink on the back, or serial ports to connect to other routers. I would say to look for one of those then connect the cable from the uplink of the first router to the WAN port of the second router.

I am confused though. Perhaps if you told us how many people will be using wireless or hardline. If most are using wired then use the above method.

as it's a linksys it's even easier!

get yourself a cable and the router and plug that and that only into your PC. Then navigate to http://192.168.1.1 and put in the username "admin" and whatever you set your password to (or the default, check the manual). In that page you will see a "device ip address" setting. Set this to something like 192.168.1.2 (so that it's different from the other one which will most likely be 192.168.1.1) and click "Apply". Then click the DHCP tab and select "Disable" and "Apply". Next click "Advanced" and "Forwarding", uncheck all the "Enable" checkboxes and click "Apply".

That should basically turn your big box of electronics into a very simple switch. Now put a cable from the "upload" port of your main router to any of the normal ports on your linksys and you should then have a network!

Enjoy your LAN!

No, not the WAN/cable port

Look at the ports on your router and there should be one labelled "uplink" if there isn't then there definately is one on the linksys. just put the uplink port on one of them into a normal port on the other one. Doesn't really matter which! Remember that if you use the uplink port on the linksys one, you can't use port 4 at the same time, there may be two holes, but they are technically the same port
