Mom had older Norton Antivirus on her computer. We dumped McAffee and ordered update using Norton Security. After uninstalling and deleting all Norton files, I downloaded the program 5 times (at least) and then ran installation. Message pops up saying other versions detected, shut down and restart to finish. But...it never finishes. Tried and gave up and got refund. Now I downloaded Norton AntiVirus 2004 and did this 2 times today and it does the same blasted thing. I'm running out of hair to pull out. :(

Welcome :)

See if this helps

Removing Norton AntiVirus 2004 from Windows 98/Me after Add/Remove Programs does not work (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2004020915570606?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=)

It should help you to remove all traces of NAV2004 from the Registry.

This message came up when I first tried to add Norton Security after dumping/uninstalling the old version of Norton Antivirus too, will this link do the same for that...and you should know, replies may go slow cuz mom lives in next town and I go back and forth to try to fix her computer problems, so please bear with me...thanks again:blush:

Within the Instructions is reference to a tool called RNAV.
That should be able to remove entries from the previous versions aswell.

Just post back when you can :)

I followed the instructions, but it did not appear to follow the path of what was in the instructions, and I get a stinkin' feeling that it did not do anything. Seems I've located and removed all straggler files except the icon on desktop for partial download of programs I started (restarted) yesterday.

Do you have a System Restore point to before you installed 2004?

what do you mean?

Goto Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>
Click on System Restore

When the program opens choose to Restore Computer to an earlier time.
Have a look through the highlighted dates to see if there is one before you installed Norton 2004.

I started new installation for Norton Security 2004 on June 1st, System Restore shows earliest restore date here with 2 things changed....7:21 pm removed Norton AntiVirus 2002 and 1:01 pm removed Symantec Network Driver Update. Now what would you suggest and in what order?

You could try the earliest Restore Point.

Beware that a System Restore will restore the PC to that point.
This means that any other programs that you installed after that point.
(any data files should be fine).

WOW!!!

I tried alot of things, did all the things you mentioned, was ready to do system restore and somehow removed ability to, and by the time I got that restored and ready to do, something I found and fixed and adjusted did the trick....

I hit the install program for Norton AntiVirus 2004 and it actually started running the pre-installation virus scan and went 100% from there.

A few spy ware programs found and NO viruses detected...now I'll be darned if I can find the one file I opened and adjusted. I do remember there was a long list of programs running in the back ground, I cleaned them up, deleted some, cleaned what had been idle and saw a program to run virus definition of Norton I believe.

All because I took check mark off that, it stopped system from thinking it was running a program that was no longer available. Will try to back track what's left of my memory and post my findings....

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS!!! :rotflmao:

FOUND IT!!!
this is what I did that I think fixed my mom's problem and allowed me to click on Norton AntiVirus 2004 installation

click on start

click on run

type in: msconfig

hit enter

go to startup tab

remove the check on boxes of programs I no longer wanted running
in background (there was a virus program running/checked off)

hit apply

then hit clean up (this deletes obsolete items)

click apply then okay

then restart computer when you are ready and it will update/reset
the new settings

this also removed programs that she didn't need running in background all the time and freed up resources for other stuff she runs..........

I hope this information is helpful for someone else down the road...

thanks again!!!!!!!!!!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY
