It sounds like you need a new startup floppy. Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and download a Windows ME (not "custom") one. Once you have downloaded it, double-click it and it will prompt you to insert a clean, formatted floppy. Boot with it to test it out.

Also, is the hard drive in the PC formatted already (as in a new drive)? If not, you will have to use FDISK to create the partitions.

Welcome

What is the make of the HDD?

It could be a corrupt startup disk.

As James suggested, goto bootdisk.com and download the WinME Custom file.
Run the file to create a startup disk.
Then boot from it.

At the A:\ prompt type
r:\setup.exe

Did the new drive come with any software to accomplish formatting?

Did you get a new startup floppy? FDISK will be on it.

To use FDISK, see this MS KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

A program like PartitionMagic, while not free is easier to use.

Hi A.jay,

If you're receiving the "type the name of the command interpreter" error when attempting to boot from the startup floppy disk, either you need to create a new startup floppy, as James Fisher suggested, or perhaps the boot device order in the computer's BIOS Setup is set to try booting from the hard drive before the floppy drive......ensure that the boot device order is set to try booting from floppy drive first, and see if you can then boot from the startup floppy disk.

When you are successful at booting from the startup floppy disk, follow these tutorials for How to Create a Partition (fdisk) and How to Format a Partition (NOTE: You do not need to use the /s switch in the format command, since you will be installing Windows after formatting).
Once the partition(s) have been created and formatted, boot from the startup floppy disk, choosing to start WITH CDROM SUPPORT. When you get to the A: prompt, put the Windows ME install CD in the drive, wait a few seconds, then key in:
setup
