Hey everyone! I have been having a problem with our router (Netgear RP614) lately in that sometimes it losses its connection, and I have to restart it (unplug for 30 seconds) to get it working again. This only seems to happen when I am doing downloading - especially using BitTorrent. What happens is that everything seems to be downloading fine, then after about 15-30 min, I lose my connection, and I ahve to restart it.
I have tried updating both my network card drivers, and I also updated the firmware on the router. I am conencted through a Motorola SB4100 cable modem. Thanks for any help!

Routers suck for downloading, so if your trying to download at anything more then 50% your regular modem speed it will just disconnect your computer, But the other computers will still have internet fine. All you can do is download at night while connected to the modem directly.

So could this be a problem with my router? Any other suggestions I should try? Thanks!

You may be able to download from internet sites but when I try to connect to over 150 other computers at once using a peer to peer program it just wont go, I have to use a internet limiting program so the router isnt overworked to try to keep up with all the connections, and limiting the connections decreases speed substantially.

There is no way download speeds would disconnect a routers connection. I run a linksys router and download at speeds of 700+ kb/s. I would check out netgears site and see why its losing connection. Remember a routers job is to route packets, and offer (if its set up correctly) basic security. I don't know myself why it would be shutting itself down, it doesn't make any sense unless it is constantly being assaulted by a Denial of Service attack to the point of shutdown, which I doubt.
Commandr I am afraid you are misinformed about downloads shutting down a router.

Thanks Northwood! I have checked netgears site, and I couldnt seem to find much. I have tried calling tech support, but since I have had the router for over a year, it would cost money to get support, which didnt seem worth it. If you have any other suggestions, be sure to let me know...I will continue to look around for an answer. Thanks a lot!!

May I suggest trying another router? Maybe even a friend's. If the router has a basic config then it should work with your network, the only thing you would have to change is the MAC address mask. If push comes to shove, bribe your friend into letting him wipr the router config and create your own from scratch. I'll try to find out what is going on with your router.

Try these solutions, my only suggestion left would be to contact your ISP about the problem.

Well, we have another router here, so if I cant get this to work, I will give that one a try.
Do you think that the Windows XP firewall is interfering with it (said that on the link you gave)? I also have norton antivirus running. Thanks for all of the help!

Im running the winxp firewall and have no problems with my router. NAV is known for causing odd and unusual problems and even making computers crash. I don't see a way that NAV could access a routers software to conflict with it, so I think we can rule that out. But just to be safe, i would try running without them on and only go on safe (non virus, spyware, etc.) sites, or download a safe file. If that works reactivate those apps one by one and watch if the router turns off. If it does safe bet is that, that certain app is having a conflict.
Try that and let us know how it goes.

I had the same problem but found it was my phone points, i use BT Broadband and it kept cutting off every so often. My girlfriend pointed out that it seemed to be everytime the phone rang (which i didn't realise) so i put another ADSL filter on the other phone and it seems fine.
Don't know if this is your problem but it might be another avenue of approach!
