I am waiting on my phone company to send my dsl modem. I know they were outside installing something but I have not received my dsl modem yet..and so..no dsl modem is on my computer. My isp now is a dial up. Sudden thunderstorm yesterday and all the electricity went out..including computer. Everything was working fine before this happened. Now when I try to dial up I do not hear the dialing of the phone...I do hear the high pitched sound and it does make a connection...a VERY slow connection. Could this be modem damage? Thanks!

first try a phone on the very same line your computer is on and see if it works. If it don't it is not the modem.

telephone line/jack is working when plugging a phone into it. It must also be working while on my computer because I *am* getting a connection-an extremely slow connection. Can lightening cause the modem to stop sounding a dial up and yet continue to make the high pitched sound and make a connection?

Lightening can cause damage to any equipment, so it's not impossible that that's what has happenned
