DNS between XP and Linux

Prior to my linux box's tantrum (see HW forum), I was having difficulty getting my XP box to talk to the Linux box via hostnames. Over IP, there was no problem at all, but neither could recognise the other by hostnames.

I'm 99% sure you don't need a DNS server running on a LAN to get this working .. ?

Windows name and DNS names are different. You need an extension (I forget what it's called) for linux to use windows names
