I purchased an HP dvd movie writer dc 4000 to copy my vhs movies to a divd. I am not wanting to bootleg or file share, just make dvds to play while on the road. My first attempt rendered the message that the vhs was copy protected.....wah!
Is there anyway around this?
Thanks,
I love this forum, always learn lots.

Hi jillmobley
Yes...it can be done, but see degsy's post first...I take it for granded that you are familiar with the procedure ie converting analog(vhs) to digital...have done it and is a very tidious and time consuming
As I am a very new member to this forum, and hate to admit that altough I read the rules still not familiar with all of them,I dont know if I can post links to sites that I think you can get what you are looking for
Did you manage to convert a vhs recording (from yr analog camcorder) into dvd?

Hi nyaxea,
You can post to tutorial sites that provide legal info, such as VCD Help etc. :)

This external dvd writer accepts analog input via rca jacks.
I have in the 'olden days' used Snappy or a little 'gizmo' that came with my Orange iBot web cam to accept analog. In those days, I never dreamed of capturing an entire movie; rather used this type capture as a sort of primative digital still camera. I would video what I wanted a picture of, then grab a still off that. I am not sure if there is anything in that procedure that would help. If I should write the thing out to hard drive then send to dvd writer.
The two that have worked easily are:
direct from digital camcorder
direct from analog vcr - a movie taped off tv
This forum has been helpful to me in the past, I appreciate your efforts.

Hi
Reading again yr posts...it appears that the vhs tape you are trying to copy is copyright protected,if so you need a special gudget that is connected at the output of yr vcr,but there is a loss of quality.
Now for non copyrighted vhs tapes you can do it easily...you can copy to yr hdd, then convert to dvd, using the proper software...of course you need a capture card installed, but since you have done something similar you must be ok
OR copy the vhs into yr digital camera, then from the digital camera transfer to yr computer...I use Pinnacle 9....and thereafter you do what you like, edit, make vcd, svcd, dvd,,,,of course plenty of software available,.a lot of info is available at

Thank you for your reply. Yes, some tapes are copy protected, that is the problem. I do not know what kind of special gadget I need. I will go to dvdhelp.com and search there.
Thank you again for your consideration of my problem.

Buying this gudget...I dont think I can help you as I live in Europe and PAL is used..you are using NTSC....Long time ago more than 7 years I got one from an electronic shop in NY,but altough I was able to copy a protected vhs,the end product was of a poor quality so I gave up

ugh.
I found an article on cnn.com that discuss this hp writer I bought as being easy to use, but, will not copy protected dvd's. Wish I had done a bit of research before just grabbing one at the store!
Thanks again for thinking about my situation.

Yes this is a similar gadget...but just dont rush to buy it...make sure that the end product quality is acceptable...usually its not
Now as far as yr dvd writer.....keep it ...mine officially does not copy protected dvds..but it does...all of them do if you use the correct software...I dont know the legal side ,but where I live one back up(that how they call it) for personal use is legal
Should you need any further info ..send me a pm.
