I have a desktop computer from 1998 with Windows '98 Plus! on it. My younger sister has alot of games and things on it, and I had alot of pictures on it. Since about 6 months ago, it will not run scandisk, it will not defragment, and it will not allow me to load any new antivirus software. Could this be due to a Virus? As well as those problems, I recently loaded AOL 9.0, which went fine, but then I decided to load the AOL Voicechat, provided by Yahoo! and Notorious. Earlier that day, the sounds with my computer had been working fine. After I loaded the voicechat, this was not the case. I've tried switching speakers, using different headphones, deleting the voicechat, etc. and have made sure that nothing is on mute. Does this possibly have something to due with the AOL Voicechat software, or could it be entirely unrelated? Please help! I'd really appreciate it.

Hi,

When you say Scandisk and Defrag don't run, do you get any error messages?

When you tried to install new anti virus software and it couldn't install was there any error messages why? If your not sure if you have a virus you could always try doing an online virus scan.

Hope this helps

Hi buddy...If you haven't already done so..run the two below programs

Download CWShredder from:
HERE (http://www.soft32.com/download-CWShredder-19014-5.html)
It should be the latest version..but hit the "check for updates" button.
Then hit the "fix" button.(NOT the SCAN button)

Then Download Adaware from here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ CHECK FOR UPDATES

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:

Scan within archives

Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING

In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level (this makes it easier for visitors to the Lavasoft Support Forums to see what options you have selected should you require assistance.)

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:

Unload recognized processes during scanning

Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan

Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:

XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion

Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

Have Adaware remove all it finds,

Keep Adaware and run it at least once a week after checking for updates.

Then download 'Hijack This! FROM HERE (http://mjc1.com/files/merijn/HijackThis.exe) create a new folder and put hijack into it Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, Check for updates first by clicking the config then tools buttons. and hit "Scan".
Create a NEW folder and put HijackThis into it. Open up the program and hit "scan" When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.
It will show what's running on your computer...Don't make any changes until
someone checks it out.;)
TUTORIAL IF NEEDED (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/hijackthis.html)

First, make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use C:\Program Files\HijackThis but feel free to use any name or folder you like. Unzip HijackThis again and save the contents (Hijackthis.exe) to the new folder you made. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from there. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

I've got to run to work for now, but I'll get all that done later. As for error messages when I'm doing this, none appear when I try to defrag-it just doesn't ever get past 0%, and when I try scandisk it always ends up saying "Scandisk has restarded 10 times due to an unknown problem."

After running the above and scandisk still won't work...you can always try to run it in safemode or close everything running in task manager except systray and explorer.

Just to say I had a problem with Scandisk not working, it said it had done it 10 times, It was because either my anti virus or firewall was running cant remember
