Being kicked off the web

We run a small peer to peer network at our location (5 systems)and we attach to the web via a Linksys combo router/switch and a modified T1 line. Say I am on the web and a co-worker comes in and turns on his machine I will be knocked off the web in the process of the other system booting up. Connection will be restored in say 5 minutes or if I immediatly reboot This is true for anyone in our shop and is not machine specific.
Can anyone let me know why this is occurring and guide me in the solution to this problem?
