Hi,

I'm trying to install a wireless ad-hoc network at the moment between 2 XP computers and 1 98 computer. I got it working fine between the 2 XP computers without WEP enabled, but as soon as I added in WEP it all went wrong.
My problem was that when I turned the WEP on, the computer obviously needed me to enter a Network Key. The key, according to XP, should have either been 5 or 13 ASCII characters. The problem was that no matter what i entered in for the key, when I returned to the settings page, Windows had reset the key to 8 characters. The connection still worked, but now I was unsure as to whether the WEP was working or not.

As well as this, the 8 characters that the computer was resetting the key to were shown as black circles, and so when my Win 98 machine asked me for the key I knew it had 8 letters, but didn't know what they were!

If anyone can help me out on this I'd be very very very appreciative!

I'm not sure about the WEP, but as far as the key then it is normal for Windows to use circles or asterisks to hide a password.
Also, it is standard for it to default to 8 characters to hide the pass, even if the key is only 5 characters.

This is so that when you look at it you cannot tell how long the password is.

It could be 5 characters or 13, but it will show 8.
