iMac 500, 768MB RAM, OS 9.2.2, Photoshop 7: how do I add a beard and change hair color, shorten sideburns? I only an amateur at Photoshop. Oh my...

I'd probably start by using the lassoo tool to select the hair, then create a new layer. On that layer use the fill menu option to put the hair colour you want to give the person into that layer. Then set the opacity of the layer so that it's slightly transparent.
That will only really work if the original hair is light coloured. Adding a beard is just a case of pasting it in from another image on a higher layer.
