Hi all , go easy on me as this is my 1st post.Just tried to upgrade from a surftime dialup package to Wanadoo broadband.I gather that you have to wait 10 days for activation but despite 2 solid green lights on the speedtouch modem it shows on the desktop as not being plugged in.I gather that windows 98 users (like me) can have problems with DSl connections.Anybody got any suggestions as to what I may have done wrong

Hi:
My suggestion is to call Wanadoo. They can walk you thru it step by step. Windows 98 isn't holding you up, I have two win98 machines connected to my dsl. If you have the two computer icons in the lower right corner with a red X thru them it's a connectivity issues.

Thanks Melodi for your suggestion.I have spent over an hour on the phone today to Wanadoo- not including about 20 minutes in the queue! The net result is they believe that there is a problem with my Windows 98.
First they suggested I re-install Dial up networking of the Windows 98 CD and then attempt to reinstall the Modem. This had no effect I still am unable to choose the DSL modem for a new connection.
Then they attempted to re-install the modem in safe mode but this made no difference.
They then suggest I try the modem in somebody elses computer or get my PC checked out by an expert!
Any more ideas people?
Could it be a Windows problem ?
How can I check myself?

Sorry that I do not have an answer, I thought wanadoo would be able to help. I have DSL and for my modem to work with my computer I had to have a 'connection manager' installed. That is software that came on a cd from my DSL company. DSL differs that way from cable broadband, it requires a connection manager or a router. When I got my router, I no longer needed the 'connection manager'. Did you not get any software from Wanadoo to install, like a connection manager. Like I said I have 98s on two of my puters running dsl with a router, no problem, even when I had only the connection manager. I've put cable broad band on many 98 systems without a problem and many DSL with connection manager too. At work a great many of our pharmacies are using 98 with DSL. I just don't think it's your OS, I wish I could offer a better answer. I can ask around. Tell me, did they send you a CD to install software? Your network card (nic) is working correct? do you have a router? There is a lot to know. Tell me exactly what you received from wanadoo please.

Hi thanks Melodi for your continued help.I am not trying to connect to a network just to have a single broadband connection on my PC.The modem came with 2 filters and a cable which I have put in and Wanadoo confirm that the line is ok.It also contained an installation CD to auto install the speedtouch modem. This appeared to run without any errors but did not ask me for any PPP info and hasnt automatically configured the connection.I have tried updated drivers for the modem , reinstalling both it and Dial up networking and updated Dial-up networking. No difference on any score. When I click on the shortcut it just shows Application Error -could not create entry.
The help section on the CD shows that windows 98 should be ok to use.
The CD also contains a program called Dr Speedtouch which is a diagnostic .On running this it shows that no PPP connection is the issue but doesn't give any idea how to get the Speedtouch as an option in Dial-up Networking if not already there.
One other thing is that in Device Manager it is listed as a separate entry not under USB or modems. I wonder if this is the main issue but havent discovered how to rectify it.I have sent Speedtouch an email and hopefully will get more information off them than Wanadoo!
Any suggestions most welcome!

Howdy Diablo:
You said you received two filters with your DSL modem.. You didn't happen to put one of those filters on the line connecting the modem to the phone line did you?? If you did, it won't work.. the filters are to be installed on the phonejack and phoneline ONLY !!

Yes Murray that's a good suggestion too. I'm not following. If you are getting high speed, dial up networking shouldn't even be a factor. Your phone jack should have a filter, the filter should have two plugs one for your phone and one for the phone line that goes to the back of the modem. With DSL there is no dialup networking. There should be three holes on the modem. 1)power cord 2)phone cord to go to dsl side of filter and 3)cat5 cable port. The cat5 (looks like phone cord, but wider) cable should plug into the back of the modem and then into the NIC (network interface card) in the computer. Either your computer had one of those, or wanadoo sent one and you had to install it. Is this how you have it set up? If you have it set up correctly, it should just be a matter of popping in the cd and following along. Sorry to be redundant, but it just sounds to me like maybe you don't have the physical setup done correctly.

Hi guys I don't think I have the cables set up wrong but I will describe it to you. I have only used one filter -directly into the phone socket in the wall!
2 connections into this
1 the phone line
2 one end of the RJ11 cable
The other end of the RJ11 cable goes into the modem which then connects into a USB port.
The modem does not have its own powerpack but draws power off the USB on the computer.
Maybe there isn't sufficient power but the green lights are on there!
Speedtouch also recommend I try the modem on another computer.
Who knows when I will get to see a broadband connection.

Well that does sound right. And you ran their CD? Followed it step by step? Did you try calling speed touch? Do you have another computer to try it on?

Let me get this straight.. Do you have the RJ11 cable going from the filter to the modem?? If so, that is WRONG.... Remove the filter.. ONLY the telephone itself should be filtered NOT the modem !!!

No. For DSL there is a filter that plugs into the jack. It has two ports one to go to the modem and one to go to the phone. A filter must be on every jack. The phone cable runs from the filter on the DSL side to the back of the modem and then the cat5 goes from the modem to the back of the computer.

Try deleting all the drivers/protocols and adapters under network properties, then restart the system (make sure you’ve removed all the PPPoE protocols ... there should be an uninstall application for PPPoE on the isp cd). When you boot your system up again windows will recognizes the drivers and re-install them. Then insert the isp cd and do a fresh install.
