Hey Drum2jc, linux is open source which is one of the advantages. I'm learning this "linux thing" myself. A great website is http://tldp.org/ which has tons of info.

it's stable, reliable, and secure. did i mention free?

it comes with everything and more you need... word processors, presentation software, webserver, databases, programing software, tons of browsers, tons of administrative tools, ftp servers, mail clients etc. i've managed to use RedHat 9.0 my main computer, i use it for all my needs except to run macromedia's flash 6. that's my only need for windows, although i could use a good emulator but i prefer not to mess with it. linux is more advanced than windows though... but once you learn the basics, it's quite simple. i installed my first version of linux when i was 13, a little over a year ago, had my webserver and counter-strike server up in about 4 months! the game server is down now due to bandwidth issues on my network. blah blah blah enough about me. somethings you probaly would consider downloading...

flash 6 player: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...sion=Netscape4
to view flash movies on websites like the on on the homepage of CTH.

the mpeg123 plugin for xmms for rh9 (allows you to play mp3s): http://dag.wieers.com/packages/xmms-mp3/

but anyways, good luck with your learning experiance, if you need help or have a question, you know where to go. : )
get your linux distro here: www.linuxiso.org/

This question has been asked in here more times than I can shake a stick at. The overall reasons why some people like Linux over windows is highly personal. The debate sparked by this question could go on for days and days. My advice to you is not to worry about what the advantages are just yet. Go on and dive into Linux and with a little time you will see why you may like it more than windows and what the advantages are. You may also hate it and rethink leaving windows. The bottom line is just go on and give it a try its not gonna kill ya.

okay, so i kinda put off learning it, but now i have a reason to learn.... i have a program- AirSnort- that as some of you may know, grabs "interesting/weak" packets and cracks WEP encryption codes ...it runs on linux.....

*disclaimer- it's only to get into my OWN home network that i forgot the wep encryption code to and have no acess to the cpanel otherwise, and i wont be using it for malicious purposes*

anyways....i was watching the videos from www.thebroken.org (video#1) and have netstumbler on my win xp home, and i have gotten the iso for Knoppix std and have it on a cd...

okay, so i pop the cd in, and first off, my integrated WLAN doesnt work beause i dont have a linux driver for it... can i just load in the windows driver? or do i have to find a linux one?
also, how do i run airsnort? i have only knoppix on the cd....if i have knoppix loaded can i pop a cd in with airsnort on it nd run it like that?

then.....yeah...still confused

help would help ...lol

thanks,
chris

I don't know if I'm right or not but can't you push the "reset" button on your router and that restores the default settings. So you wouldn't have a network key. I'm sure this would be a lot easier than booting up with linux and running airsnort and all that. thebroken.org is a good site with good vids, some pretty cool stuff they got on there

not like i actually want to know how to do that....WINK WINK ....okay i'm done
