Computer not recognising my 98 cd?

Hello all. I finally got my computer cleaned out after a much needed reformat. So anywho, I go about installing windows 98 all over again and everything is going smoothly, windows is installed and it tells me to remove my windows cd and reboot my machine. After the reboot It asks me to insert my windows cd once again so that it can install misc stuff, this is where the problem starts. It gets about 5% done whatever stuff its installing and then it all of a sudden it says that it cannot find a file and to please insert my windows 98 disk. So I click OK because my cd is already in the drive, and it still cannot find the file. So I skip the file and I get more and more files that cannot be found. The path that it was looking for the files was in C\\:WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PRECOPY. So I click cancel, windows boots up and I can't get my computer off of 16 bit color, can't connect to the internet, and it doesn't recognise my audio, or video card. I'm kinda stuck, and I'm not exactly a computer whiz so try to be patient with me :P.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
-Jay

Hi,
The missing files could be from a corrupt CD.
Give it a clean for the next time to need to use it.

As for drivers then it's normal that Windows98 would not have them for your system.

You will need to find the drivers for your system either with the CD that came with it or online.

re

IIRC, the precopy files are part of an OEM install. If you are reinstalling with a CD ROM provided by the manufacturer, the precopy files should be on that disk. However, if you have a disk which is not the manufacturer's, the path you need is different now. Try pointing to the CD ROM drive letter, and to the Win98 folder.
Is the WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PRECOPY folder on your C drive at present, and does it have the files in it?

Hey thanks alot guys. All it took was for me to redirect it from C\\:WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PRECOPY to D:\win98. I'll carry on with the re-install and I'll post here if I have any other troubles.

Thanks again!

Arg, still having problems. I still can't seem to get my display off of 16Color and 640x480, and I'm not sure how to re-connect to the internet to get drivers. I've got my IP adress and all the stuff I need. But I'm not sure where to enter it all in, and all the help files I've searched for windows 98 are all for dial-up and I'm on high speed.

The easy way out would be to call your ISP and have them walk you through the configuration steps required for their protocols.

I've not set up an always-on connection (ADSL, Cable), but I would think you'd enter the info in the same place as for a DUN connection - Dial Up Networking. The only difference I could imagine would be you'd want to go to your connection Tab and set dialing preferences to Never Dial.

This is just a guess; as I said, I've never configured that type of connection. My actual advice is to call the ISP.
