wireless issues, invalid ip addy?

i have a dell inspiron 8100 laptop, running xp.
im using a netgear mr814 wireless router, a big grey one that can run 4 pc's at once.
i have a cisco aironet 340 11mbps card and i am trying to set this up.
i get an open connection, everything looks fine, signal strength is good etc.
but, i cant get online. it shows packets going out but none received.
i saw one place that said the ip address was invalid , but cant find that again.
and i havent entered a wep code, which i dont know how to find, or do. and maybe it isnt needed since i have it set to detect automatically?
im not very knowledgable about any of this and need a simple walkthru i think. any help is appreciated.

This exact same thing happened to me. Go to start>control panel>network connecions right click on your card and the properties then go to tcp/ip and click properties and manually assign the ip and subnet gateway and stuff. The ip should be something thats not your router ip and then when you connect it should work. Repost if it doesn't work.

Go to where I said to go in my previous post and select "Use the following ip address" and "Use the following DNS server address". Then enter an ip in you range such as 192.168.1.xxx (for linksys at least) and enter the rest of your info then it should work.

First ensure that the Wireless Connection is not bridged, if it bridged, you will not be able to obtain the IP address properly. As you have excellent signal and not connecting the network may be due to the bridge. To do so:

1. Click Start, Choose RUn, Type NCPA.CPL and click Ok.
2. Right-click the Wireless icon and choose Remove from Bridge if available.

If not follow the steps given below:

Instead of assigning manual IP, you may enable the DHCP server for the netgear router by accessing the router console in a pc, which it has been connected through ethernet port. You can access the console by opening Internet Explorer. Type the following IP address:

192.168.0.1 and click Go, this should open the router console. Please check the router manual for enabling DHCP server. Enter the starting IP address as:

192.168.0.100 and the ending address as 192.168.0.200
Enter the default gateway id, if available as 192.168.0.1
Enter the DNS addresses provided by you ISP.

After doing so, click Submit for the settings to take effect.

In the Computer, please follow these steps:

1. Click Start, Choose Run, Type NCPA.CPL and click Ok.
2. Right-click the Wirless LAN Connection icon and choose Properties.
3. Select TCP/IP Internet Protocol from the list and click Properties.
4. Choose Obtain an IP Address Automatically. Click Ok.
5. Select the Wireless Network Tab, Click Advanced.
6. Choose Access point (infrastructure) network preferred and uncheck automatically connect to non preferred networks and click Close.
7. Click Refresh button near the Available network box. You should see the Netgear ssid in the list.
8. Select Netgear entry and Click Configure. Click Ok again.
9. Click Ok.

You should be able to connect to wireless network using the netgear router.
