When installing Windows 98SE from the install disk the first option to appear is as follows:

Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu
1. Start Windows 98 from CD-ROM
2. Start computer with CD-ROM support

If reinstalling Windows on a system that already has Windows 98 installed, which option do you use?

The reinstall is to repair corrupt or missing system files. This is not a complete clean installation. This is a repair install only. Thanks.

If Windows 98 is already on it and you want to install over the top, just put the Windows 98 CD in and install it within Windows.

Have you tried a repair first?

START | RUN

Type in

SFC

Check for altered files????

START / RUN / SFC does not work. All I want to do is a Repair Install. Do I have to change my BIOS to set the boot sequence to: 1. CD-ROM - 2. Harddrive - 3. Floppy
I'm still curious about what is the difference with option #1 and option #2 at the startup menu. Thanks.

I've never seen those options before. Must be an SE thing.

I would suspect that 1# would start the Windows Setup straight away.
2# would take you to a DOS prompt but also loading the CD-ROM drivers so you can use the CD-ROM in DOS.

Another place the SFC can be accessed from is the Tools tab in your System Information Screen. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information.

Did you File search for SFC.exe to see if it on your system? It's possible it didn't get installed.

To do your over the top install, just run setup.exe while in Windows already.

Put the CD in, and let it run. If the option screen comes up again (my SE didn't when I recently did this) choose option 1.

Option #2 worked like a charm. System did a reinstall and left non system files alone. All is well. Thanks for the help and great advise. This thread can now be officially closed.
