I'm trying to set up a LAN between my two Dell PC's. One is running Windows 98, the other is running XP. Both are connected to a gigafast router. The problem is, I can't figure out how to get the 98 pc to connect. The XP is showing a connection, and it sends a few packets before it just stops. It is showing no packets recieved. Everything should be installed correctly. The 98 is using a d-link DFE 530tx+ ethernet card.

First thing I learnt doing this is Do you have a firewall set up.
If so it needs to be configured to allow traffic.
In my case I have Pc-cillin, when user profile is set to direct or home I can't network, when set to office I can.
This maybe won't fix your problem but hey, you never know.

I'm pretty sure that neither one of them do. I think the problem I'm facing is more basic than that, like in the network setup; is there any thing in particular I should look at? Does d-link have its own LAN client or something?

Does the router have DHCP and is it giving out IP Addresses to the PCs?
You can check the IP Addresses via a Command Prompt and using IPCONFIG.
What error messages do you get when trying to access the network and shared files?

Yeah, the XP PC has an IP assigned to it. It pretty much automatically connects when it is plugged into the router. I'm guessing Win 98 isn't designed to do this, but then again, I'm having some trouble understanding the way you're supposed to connect in the first place. Am I supposed to use the windows dial-up neworking program to make a new connection or something? Because the dialog box when setting up new connections does not show my ethernet card as a means of connection (just my modem, and some VPN option). Device manager shows the card is working correctly, but the PC isn't being assigned an IP.
I'll have to check on the exact error message when looking for shared files, but I'm almost sure it's a standard "no network connection detected" message.

In Win98, goto Control Panel and Network Properties.
Is your Ethernet Adaptor listed?
Is there a TCP/IP protocol listed?
Goto the Properties of the TCP/IP and make sure that Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected.
In Internet Explorer>Connections>
Make sure Never Dial A Connection is selected.
Also, check in the LAN properties that Automatically Detect Settings is seleted and Proxt Server is UnChecked.
