its vanished!

also in multimedia audio tab, the 'show vol control in task bar' check box, is greyed out

also in file search there are references to shortcuts of vol control, but these now lead to know where.

where has it gone, why did it suddenly vanish, how can i get it back/replace it.

someone sugested it was/is a registry hiccup and this could ber restored?????? how to do this? They mentioned to 'play around' in DOS.... Im not convinced I should be let loose in the DOS arena. :oP (unless very simple)

The problem did NOT exist before the 11th June 2004

any thoughts, thanks

Welcome :)

Have you tried reinstalling the sound drivers?

I reinstalled the sound card driver.... no change.
Got another sound card and installed it and the drivers.... but get an problem messege with sound card (it is a compatible one):
Windows refuses to start it up... when the drivers are reinstalled, it installs them, but when it needs to reboot to (whatever it needs to do), it doesnt reboot..... it freezes.

Ho Hum!

i have a thought.

More than likely there is ONE opition turned off. Try going through the options in Control Pannel for sound and try to work outword from there. However, i think that might not be your complete problem. I'm sure it isn't your sound card. Reinstall the previous and then check settings. If to no avail then simply made sure that the sound card is attached to the correct port, in there, ect...i have found more often times that a problem with a computer comes to two things:
1.) There is one wire is not correctly placed.
2.) There is one lose nut behind the keyboard. ;)

thanks for thoughts Star
May indeed be a loose nut! :oP

in device manager, the old sound card was not even mentioned (vanished) as has the windows volume controls.
it does mention the new sound card but has an exclaimatin mark by it and note to say:
'windows found a prob on start up and will never attempt to start the device again'.... CODE 11

suggests updating drivers for it, so I followed instructions to do this.... it found a better driver and asked if i wished it to be installed... I pressed 'next' for continue..... and the egg timer is frozen to the screen and windows seems to have 'the lights on, but no-one in'!!! it wont complete task. grrrr

thoughts appreciated.

Try this:
1. Uninstall Anything related to your sound card (Audio) via Add/Remove Programs

2. Boot into safe mode and click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager tab.
Click the + next to Sound, video and game controllers. Click each entry for your sound card and click remove.

3. Reboot to Normal mode and re-install the drivers.

Thanks.
I uninstalled everything and actually put my original sound card back in, then reinstalled including drivers.
when played a sound file it stuttered and crackled horendously then froze up so i rebooted and.................

the sound of the startup (i hadnt heard for ages) came through as sweet as a lark. All seems well.

like a lot of things..... it seems simple when it is known, so I thank you for your knowledge.

For all thoughts, very much appreciated.
