I recently tried to upgrade my system from 98 to XP home (foolish me). It didn't take so I tried to put 98 back on. I didn't have a recovery disk so I did a fresh installation. I got it back...but now I'm getting errors out the ying-yang. The system is not recognizing my modem (verizon), I can't log on to IE. It gives me an illegal function error (Msoobe). I had someone look up the error and he said it was an XP authorization code error. He said he didn't think all of XP was removed and I need to reformat the hard drive with a 98 boot disk to clear it out completely. So to make a long story short...I copied a win98 SE OEM disk from bootdisk.com. So how do I use it?

It was suggested that I use the fdisk command.
It's this correct? |

Hi BigSexy,
I hope you don't mean that you copied the file you d/loaded from bootdisk.com directly to a floppy disk, as that won't create the startup disk that you need. When the file for Windows 98 SE OEM is d/loaded, you need to put a formatted floppy disk in the drive and then double-click on the d/loaded file in order to create the startup disk. It would be best if you used FDISK to delete the current partition, then create a Primary DOS partition, format it and then install WIN98. Have a look at this tutorial: How to Delete a Partition (fdisk) If you have only the one partition, you won't need to follow steps 6 - 14 (which deal with deleting logical and then extended partition), so after step 5, skip to step 15. This assumes that the partition on which XP was installed was formatted FAT32........if it's an NTFS partition, at step 16 you would choose to delete Non-DOS partition. After deleting the current partition, have a look at this tutorial: How to Create a Partition (fdisk). Once you have created a Primary DOS partition, you can then format it and then install WIN98.
