I'm having an issue with a dell laptop i just acquired from a friend of mine, and dell will not help me since it is not registered in my name. There is a boot up password and i don't know it. How can I by-pass the password. Is it the same as conventional PCs where you can simply pull a jumper? I really don't want to have to take apart this notebook. But I really need to know how to get around this password because I can't even go into the BIOS without it. Thanks..

He doesn't remember it. He works in IT and he laptop was on loan to a sales rep who put in the password, who found a new place of employment.

Your best bet is to find the password, however there should be a CMOS battery and maybe even a jumper in the laptop somewhere, however, opening it up to get to it could invalidate the warrenty, break the laptop, make your dog run away, your car break down, start a war, and millions of other bad things,;) so I don't really suggest it unless you don't mind the slight possibility of the laptop becoming a paperweight. Good luck to you though

either have your friend who used to own the computer contact dell or you can search the web using dell laptop bios password as keywords

Welcome :)

Look on the Dell website for the manual.
It should have instructions on how to clear the CMOS.
