glad i didn't have those problems.
if i did i think i'd just do a clean install/ghost :D

It is still August. But like you I don't think they will make it.

Microsoft.com is telling everyone with XP to turn on their Automatic Updates in anticipation of SP2.

I have my auto update turned off until I feel like it is safe to update to sp2. I am sure there will be a bunch of fixes released the first month or so after it is released.

Why turn auto update off?
You can set it to prompt you when updates are available, you can then choose to install or not.

I always keep it off anyway. Got tired of the messages when updates are available because I never want to update at the time I am reminded.
