View Full Version : Framing, domain registration..

Hi All,

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction.
I recently registered a domain name and the company offer "web forwarding" (framing?) to my ISP webspace. OK so far, but I've realised that this means Google only sees a short "header" when it trawls my site - not the whole thing.

The service offers all sorts of DNS options - should that be what I need to adjust, and if so how do I make sense of it?

Or do I need to purchase web "hosting" from the company too? And if so, will that work for the two domains I've registered or will I need to buy two lots of web-hosting?

Thanks for any help with the newbie questions!

Adam

usually when you use a forwarding service your site is within a frame. Which forwarding service are you using?

You may what to check with them and see if you can change the nameserver there to directly link to the site. The info for the nameserver should have been sent to you when you signed up for the hosting service. Check your emails.

Yes, the forwarding is done using a frame. The company is: http://www.123reg.co.uk/ . They certainly offer DNS stuff - the trouble is I don't know where to start with it! (E.g. what's a nameserver?!) Here's a shot of their DNS settings page:

I can understand why you are confused. I am confused also with their page. This might take a while to figure out. Sorry, I will be reading their faq, but maybe someone will be able to help before I am finished.
Who is your hosting service?

Suggestion, next time use godaddy.com for your forwarding service.

123-reg give you the option to forward in a frame which masks the URL via the frame, or to simply redirect so that domain.com/page goes to realaddress.com/~user/page for example.

Unless you have web hosting which has told you its nameserver etc you'll want to use the forwarding features.

OK, so if I want my site to keep the nice URL, but not use the frame - then I need to buy some web-hosting from 123-reg (who do mention their "nameservers")? Would I need to start fiddling about with those DNS options at that point?

Thanks :)

do you not have a hosting service yet? If not, then it would be best purchasing it from them at this point.

No, I've been using my free ISP webspace. I'll look into getting the hosting then.

Thanks Dan, Steven :)
