974k is very large  For a website, they really need to be around 40-60k but this is after clicking on a 3k or less thumbnail.

You need to decrease the resolution to around 72 dpi , decrease the actual size, and save as a medium quality jpg

If you don't have a lot of images to process, you can just resize them individually. If you have a lot of pics, you can use the batch options in IrfanView to make thumbnails of your selected size. You can also use the batch processing to resize the pics for use on a website.

For "personal" images (as opposed to business site images where speed of loading is more important) you can resize the images to any reasonable size and make the file sizes less than 60k. 640x480 is a decent size. Less is better but you get into the tradeoff where your choices are smaller files or better quality. Usually 50-70% compression will make a decent quality pic for displaying on a monitor and reduce file size considerably.

I'm assuming the pics you have are jpg's. If you reduce them you lose quality you never get back so just keep in mind that you should always work with a copy or "save as" a new file name. If you leave the originals at full size they will be the best for printing if you ever decide to make prints.

If you don't have other software you want to use, IrfanView is versatile and free. ;)
