DSL disconnecting

Help! In the last couple of days, after connecting to DSL through MSN, internet explorer I am disconnected after a maximum of 5 minutes with no warning. The only way to re-connect is to restart the PC. The modem appears to be working fine. No error message is received. I am using Windows 98. Have called Qwest DSL-- they say its not their problem. Compaq support just had me run Adware which found nothing. Any ideas? (I am a novice)
