I have a Hewlett Packard PC that I just reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98SE on. I downloaded MSN Messenger this evening twice...first time, saving it to my hard drive and trying to install it...second time, I did as the MSN site suggested and clicked "open" instead of saving it, and running it from there. Both times, when trying to install the program, I get a window saying "A required resource cannot be located."

The strangest part is the title of the window...each time it was strange character typing...nothing readable. When I tried to install the program from the file that I had downloaded to my harddrive, I clicked ok on that window...then tried again...got the same box, but with different characters in the title bar each time. I've never encountered this before and not sure what to do. I would appreciate any input anyone might have....not sure if this is a problem with my computer or the download.

Welcome to CTH Auburnlass. I am not really sure what happened but it does sound as though you have a corrupted download. Are you running any download managers? If so disable them before downloading. If not, try again from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b5bfaee-4bfa-42bf-a42e-417d748cefa1&displaylang=en) and follow the online instructions.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you, AnnMarie for your help. I apologize for not letting you know how it worked before now, but I had a good friend to pass away the day after I posted my request, and am just now getting back in a routine.

I did try the link you inserted...the install wouldn't work from there either. I began to look around that site though and realized I had not downloaded my Window's Updates after I reformatted. After I did that, I was able to install :) So, thank you for the link...in a round about way it worked..lol.
