Hi,

When you say your going to upgrade to 98 then to XP, are you going to add more RAM? 64 megs isn't enough for XP. Your really need 128 megs or more for XP.

Howdy:

Also, are you planning on putting this new hard-drive in that older computer?? If you are, I doubt VERY much is the CMOS will even recognize it.. To be sure, XP probably wouldn't install on this system !!

The system will not be able to use the entire hdd due to BIOS restrictions..

my problem has just completly changed
let me start from the begining
we used to have a compaq computer 64mb ram 16gb hd windows 98. Well i built a new computer and used the cables and the cd drives and the floppy drive. So one of my mom friends wants me to add some upgrades to her computer it had like 4mb ram 202mb hd and was a mini. i didnt know how to work on a mini so i took her cables and cd drive and floppy drive and connected it to my old compaq. before i could only get it to run with her windows 95 hd but just now realized what i did wrong. so i put my old compaq hd with windows 98 on and now it works. Now do u think i should replace my existing hard drive or use my new 80gb as a slave? then when i buy the 256mb ram and new video card i could buy the full version of windows xp i could reformat the hd and install xp straight up. would that work???

I think you should go to the XP site at Microsoft.com and run their upgrade advisor to see if XP will even run on that system..

What kind of computer do you have? Name, Model etc.?

If the PC has a bios that is upgradable to 256mb's of ram and will work, the it may take XP with few to no problems. But, you have got to consider your other hardware also. Sound, Modem, and any other devices you have in there. XP doesn't detect and wont install drivers for alot of the OLD hardware. The biggest problem is that if it is a Compaq, you most likely wont be able to get updated drivers that will work.

Do you already have the Windows XP cd? IF you do then put it in and run the System Compatibility test and see if the system will handle xp. It will give you a list of Possible problems.

Also, if you could get all of this to work with XP, you'd be much much better off doing a clean install instead of Upgrades. Especially since your starting with 95.
