If I go to a non-existent web page....

Hello

If I either type or click on a link to a webpage that doesn't exist anymore, instead of the standard 'The page cannot be displayed' screen, I get a dodgy search engine which is slowing down my connection. I don't know what website the search engine is located on, because it is stored in my personal settings from what I can see from the address, although I cannot find the location. The address is as follows ('Tai' is my username):

res://C:\DOCUME~1\Tai\LOCALS~1\Temp\drv.res/error.htm#

followed by the incorrect webpage after the # sign.

When I tried to find this file, I assumed the DOCUME~1 was documents and settings, but I couldn't find any folders beggining with LOCALS.

I have tried deleting all my Cookies and Internet Files, but to no avail. Please can somebody help!

Some other information: I use IE6, I have XP Professional, and I think the problem started when I downloaded MSN Messenger Plus.

After acting upon common sense, I deleted the line:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.ugxezstnpgmevic.us/MDyQa...tKhUMvHMSV.html

However, after restarting IE, an toolbar pops up at the bottom of my screen, and the line comes back up on HijackThis. How do I get rid of it permanantly?

BTW if I search on the toolbar the web address that comes up is:

Hi Hingi

First what you need to do is this go to Google under more.. click on it download google tool bar install it, and then go and download S&D spybot, Install it after you have done this from S&D there's a link follow it to download Spyblaster download it These are small programs and very very useful.

Run the Spybot fix all the problems it might find like spyware etc... and then Run spyblaster it will remove the homepage hijacker and thern within the spyblaster you can block your home and prevent it from being Hijacked again. i am sure it will work, if not come back and we can think of something else.

Also you can download this browser it is very very good the same as IE6 but with more options http://www.advancedbrowser.com

Hmmmmm.... I woke up today and my computer was formatted due to a virus my brother picked up - he couldn't be bothered to run an online virus scan - and the problem has mysteriously disappeared! But thanks anyway for all your help!
