Default printer changes automatically
I recently reinstalled Windows 2000 on my PC (including complete re-format of disk, so there is no "junk" left over from previous install). Then I added a network printer (Epson C84) via "Add Printer"; this printer is attached to one of the 6 PC's in my small network. Later, I bought and installed a new printer (Epson RX500) ... it is connected directly to the USB port of the PC on which I reinstalled Windows. I can print just fine to either printer. BUT ... even though I set my default printer to be the RX500, it keeps getting changed to the C84.
I've tried to troubleshoot this , and I haven't been able to tie the "switch" to any particular application or action on my part. It doesn't happen at boot. If I shut down w/ the default printer set to the RX500, and reboot, the default printer is still the RX500. But ... get this ... I used my pc for about 30 minutes after a reboot; before I walked away I checked the default printer and it was still the RX500. Two hours later I came back to my PC, and now the default printer is the C84! Please Help Thanks. |

maybe you've got a virus or some adware. Have you tried scanning for any of them?

narom,
I have the same exact problem..two networked printers configured on my laptop and the Epson C84 seems to set itself as the default every so often when I really want the Lexmark set to the default. This problem never existed when I was usign the HP T65 before I had the Epson. Pretty sure I have no virus's or adware software as I run Norton and Ad-Aware regularly... hmmm -Joel |

go to your control panel, click on printer, make sure the correct printer is selected as default - Click on the proper printer icon and click on printer, and make sure default is selected.

I have the exact same issue on a clients network. I just took over a local orthodontist's network, and have found lots of problems. One his machines are ancient..running windows 98 SE. I have upgraded the most commonly used machines and servers to XP Pro. I have 2 directly LPT1 connected printers each connected to a different server. Server A: XP and epson printer for picture printing. Server B: XP and LPT1 connected okidata (appointment slip printer)printer. Client C: XP and LPT1 connected HP laserjet 4000. All 3 machines have the hp set as the default printer, but it keeps changing at, inconsistant intervals, to default to the Epson. I have removed the printers and readded all of them, and ensured that they are being shared properly. everything works fine then the default changes. Any ideas??? I need some help.
As I side note I have found several exploits on the server A: ...most of them were fairly harmless, internet tracking things. I am using Spyware 1.3 and ad aware se personel. Spybot keeps finding backorifice.b, and interfun exploits (trojan) and crashing. I will run spybot in safe mode to remove these exploits this evening. Are these related?? I hate to rebuild this server...It has every one of his clients pictures, and insurance letters, and xrays on it. Lots of data to migrate. Help |
