A little background:
I've got two ISP's going -- MSN and Earthlink. I was able to use both for a long time, then one day something weird happened -- Earthlink stopped being able to surf websites. I would log on to MSN and would be able to surf using either the MSN browser or IE. However, logged onto Earthlink, I'd type a URL into the address bar (for example, www.google.com), and IE would search fruitlessly... looking at the status bar, I see that the browser is adding an extra www. and an extra .com to the original url (for example, www.www.google.com.com) and obviously, not be able to find it. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling both ISP's software, but to no avail. Anyone have this problem? Last edited by calbearone; August 23rd, 2004 at 03:55 PM. |

Hi buddy....you could try this.
Close IE and go to Start > Run, and run the following commands, one after the other, each line followed by 'enter': regsvr32 shdocvw.dll regsvr32 urlmon.dll regsvr32 comcat.dll regsvr32 actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message saying the command was successful.

Okay, thanks for the advice, but it didn't work
A little addition to my issue stated above: In the Status Bar, I was getting an error like IE was adding an extra extension to whatever I typed into the address bar (for example, www.google.com became www.www.google.com.com, then www.www.google.com.net, then www.www.google.com.edu... searching for those addresses. I noticed that it was auto.search.msn.com doing the searching though, so I disabled Search from Address Bar hoping that would solve things. Nope. Page cannot be displayed error, though it doesn't hunt through bogus URLs anymore. Here's my Hijack log, just in case there's something wrong in there. I sneaker-netted it to and from the problem pc: Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 5:00:10 PM, on 8/22/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\cidaemon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\BCMSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe C:\Program Files\CheckIt\86\CheckIt86.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\MA111 Configuration Utility\wlancfg4.EXE C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\My Documents\My Downloads\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://mommykiss.com/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dellnet.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.searchv.com/w/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dellnet.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:8080 O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file) O2 - BHO: CheckIt 86 - {82DF1118-9B92-45d8-B78F-1737A69A06E1} - C:\Program Files\CheckIt\86\CheckIt86.dll O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BCMSMMSG] BCMSMMSG.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DwlClient] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb0 4.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccRegVfy] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccRegVfy.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sr1exe] "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Dell\Alert\252\updtSup3.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Global Startup: CheckIt 86.lnk = C:\Program Files\CheckIt\86\CheckIt86.exe O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ? One thing to check - in TCP/IP setup (the location varies depending on version of Windows and whether you're on dialup or a network, but it's usually under network settings) see what it has listed as search domains.
