My jpeg and gif files are now netscape files

Upgraded to netscape 7.2 yesterday and suddenly all my jpeg and gif files have a netscape icon. I can open them, however, I no longer can differentiate (and quickly sort) between jpeg and gif. How can I get back to my beloved red and green icons? Help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Rush, Welcome to CTH.
Left click on a .jpeg file once to highlight it, then hold the shift key and right click on the highlighted file. Select 'OpenWith'.
In the Open With menu choose Iexplore. Also check the 'always use selected program to open files of this type'. Click OK.

Do the same for.gif's

**If you were viewing the pics in a photo viewing/editing program instead of IE, then choose that program instead of Iexplore.

My jpeg and gif files don't change

Thank you for your prompt reply, Tb525. I tried what you suggested (and enabled 'always open with this program') but the Netscape icons refuse to budge. Tried three times, but no cigar. Maybe I am somewhat dense, but were the original red icon (jpeg) and green (gif) related to iexplore? The iexplore blue icon is something I know from my laptop which runs ME, but my enquriy relates to a system running 98SE. I suppose I could try and uninstall netscape 7.2 but now I am gun-shy that this might cause other problems. If you have any further thoughts I would appreciate to hear from you. Thanks.

Try this,
1. Open any folder in Windows 98 and select Folder Options from the View menu in Windows Explorer. Click the File types tab to see a full list of file sorts and their associations.

2. Select the file type you want to alter and click Edit. To change the icon used to display this file type click the Change Icon button. This won’t affect the association with this file type.

3. Select the new icon from the set provided or click Browse to search for other icon files. You could use an icon of your own design, provided it is a bitmap, the correct size and saved with the ICO extension.

4. Click OK twice to confirm the change.

Hi Rusch,

Its a silly problem, dont worry and do like this...
Hold shift key and right click on your jpeg/gif file. Select Open with and select one of your favourite jpeg/gif softwares.
Eg:- IE, Photoshop, etc...

Enjoy

Thank you
