No Google.com
Certified Non-Geek Here. I have lost my ability to go to google.com. Everything else seems to load just fine. Ran Norton - found nothing. I also run Zone Alarm. The thought is mabe Qhost problems. Tried to run Symantec Qhosts fix.exe but it fails at "windows\inf\mdmirmdm.PFN". Thought maybe someone could help. Thank you in advance. Remember - me non geek.
Also, I did get and run "hijackthis" but not sure how to post.

Hi TyNo, Welcome to CTH!
Download 'Hijack This!'. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply. http://www.allsecpros.com/download/HijackThis.zip |

Run HT again and check the following items. Doublecheck so as to be sure not to miss one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT 'fix checked'. You Must restart your computer in when you're done. Click Start > Search > For Files and Folders > All Files and Folders.
Click 'More Advanced Options' and check search , hidden, system and subfolders. Type in Hosts and click Search. Double click on each entry, If the 'Open With' dialog pops up, choose Notepad. Look through the Host file for any reference to Google. If you find one, edit it out, close the hosts file and save the changes. Also try running CWShredder. Open CWShredder and click 'Fix'. http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/...0-17-150.shtml |

What happens when you click on this link?
http://www.google.com Next, Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ After installing AAW, and before running the program, FIRST update the reference file by clicking 'check for updates now'. Now do the following: - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine: check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning." - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot." Press "Scan Now" - Check option "Use Custom scanning options" - Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan" - Press "Select drives\folders to scan" - Select the active partition which is usually C: Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives... It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Right-click in that pane and choose "select all" Now press "Next" again. It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK. Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot. |

All these entries are from HP, you can fix them with HijackThis. They should not keep you from going to google though..

More than likely, it was the Searchit Toolbar preventing you from going to Google.
For prevention, read: So how did I get infected in the first place? |
