Problems with DNS addresses

Hi all

Having spent most of the weekend with no connection I contacted my ISP (NTL ) this morning. Ironically I could connect only using Kazaa Lite. I could not connect using any other program. My ISP ran a diagnostic test on my set top box and a ping test and all looked Ok. They convinced me that the problem lay with my PC. Later in the day I talked to a friend who is much nore PC savvy than I will ever be and he concluded that my DNS servers were not being automatically detected.

He took me into control panel, network connections, local area connection,Internet protocol (TCP/IP ) Properties. He told me to check the box marked "Use the following DNS server addresses" and and to manually insert the preffered and alternate DNS servers which I did and all seems well.

Can anyone possibly help me in regard to getting my PC to automatically detect these settings. I am quite a novice and any help in understandable terms would be very appreciated.
Kind regards
Steve

Welcome

What OS?

If XP then change back to Obtain DNS Automatically.
Then open a command prompt and type
ipconfig /flushdns
press enter

then
ipconfig /registerdns
press enter

See if you can then access the net.

What DNS addresses are you using?

Search your pc for files called HOSTS and open them in notepad.
Are there any contents?

Delete everything after

127.0.0.1 localhost

then resave the file.

Also run a Spyware scan

Just as a matter of interest, I changed to ADSL 4 weeks ago and the DNS was default set to auto detect. Result was half my major sites were no longer available eg ANZ, ASX

ISP Help Desk suggested I put in the DNS manually. Haven't had a problem since. Still on 'manual' :-)

The Log seems fine.

All I could suggest is to unplug and reset the modem.
Also release and renew your IP Address.

Unplug the modem from your PC.
goto the control panel and set the DNS to auto.

Then goto a command prompt and type
ipconfig /release_all
enter

Then reset the modem.
when it is done
plug it back into the PC

goto the command prompt and type

ipconfig /renew_all
press enter

The next thing I would suggest would be to remove the TCP/IP protocol and maybe the other network card & settings.

Seems alot to do seeing as though your Internet is working.
